A number of ducks have been senselessly killed by speeding drivers who are treating a town's park like a racetrack.

Burnley Borough Council said there have been multiple incidents involving selfish drivers speeding around Towneley Park close to Holmes Road and Towneley Hall car park.

And as a result some of the ducks from the park have been mown down and killed.

A spokesperson for the council said park staff have tried to speak with the motorists, and on a number of occasions have even asked them to slow down, but this has unfortunately had little effect.

The council spokesperson said: "We’re noticing an issue regarding speeding drivers around Towneley Park at the moment, particularly around Holmes Road and the Hall car park.

"This is a popular park, with children, dogs and ducks often straying out onto the roads - it's not a racetrack.

"Sadly a number of ducks have been knocked down and killed recently.

"Our parks staff have spoken to drivers and signalled to speeders to slow down on several occasions, often with little effect.

"The speed limits are there to protect other users of the park.

"Please keep to them and be mindful of animals and pedestrians on the car parks."
