FORMER Stonyhurst College rugby captain Joe Ansbro won his first Cambridge 'Blue' and helped his side to a 31-16 victory over Oxford in the 124th Varsity Match at Twickenham.

The 20-year-old centre was in impressive form throughout the match as Cambridge ran in five tries in the biggest winning margin since 1970.

Ansbro, who is studying Natural Sciences at Robinson College, left Stonyhurst for Cambridge in 2004 after achieving four Grade As in his A levels.

He is the college's first Cambridge or Oxford rugby Blue for some years.

His first team debut followed a successful season last year when he was voted Cambridge University's Most Valuable Player in an Under 21s team victory over the RAF.

Ansbro, who plays outside centre, was one of eight new Blues in the strong team selected for the annual rugby union match at the home of England rugby.

Simon Charles, director of sport and first team rugby coach at Stonyhurst College, said he has no doubts that Ansbro could make it as a top level player.

He said: "We're delighted he has got his Blue because that is something he always set out to do. To do it in only his second year is a great achievement. But he is a very talented player."

He added: "Joe was the outstanding player in a very a good team when he was at Stonyhurst. He was the captain of team and led a successful side on a tour to Australia.

"At the moment, he is concentrating on his education but I have no doubt that he is good enough to become a professional rugby player if that is the path he wishes to choose."
