RE the front page story "Canal death safety call" (LET, August 10) which related to the inquest into the death of a four-year-old boy who left a playground in Burnley and drowned in the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and subsequent calls to improve the safety of the playground.
I would like to clarify the situation regarding the security of the playground.
It was, and is, surrounded by a 3ft high metal fence, with a gated access.
The playground is around 25 yards from the canal and is separated from the canal towpath by a stone wall around 4ft high.
There is a "legitimate" access point to the towpath -- a narrow gap in the wall -- nearby to allow people to get on and off the towpath which is the responsibility of British Waterways.
I would like to pass on the council's sympathies to the family of the young boy Mohammad Hamaad Shahid.
