FIREFIGHTERS had to cut an Accrington man free from his vehicle after it spun off the road following a collision with another car.

Police said Imran Kahliq, in his 20s, was taken to Blackburn Royal Infirmary suffering minor back injuries after his Nissan Almera collided with a Honda Civic at the junction of Brown Street and Richmond Street, Accrington at 1pm yesterday.

The Honda overturned as a result of the collision but driver Mary Anne Simpson, in her 50s, from Oswaldtwistle managed to free herself from the vehicle and escaped unhurt.

PC John Birch, based at the road policing unit, Accrington, said: "The accident occurred on Brown Street at the junction with Richmond Street and it appears the driver of the Almera had failed to give way at the junction and hit the other vehicle side on causing the Honda to overturn.

"The Almera has hit a parked Vauxhall Astra and then collided with the Honda.

The driver had to be plucked from the vehicle by the fire service and was taken to Blackburn Royal Infirmary suffering from minor back and neck injuries.

The driver of the Honda did not receive hospital treatment but was obviously shaken up."

The road was closed for an hour while the vehicles and debris were removed from the scene.
