MORECAMBE children are being offered a chance to join a top sporting event in the prestige City of Manchester stadium.

Youngsters from Poulton are to enter a team in the 2005 North West Street Games on Friday, August 26.

A team of up to 50 children is wanted to represent the area in nine sports and games including athletics, basket-ball, cricket, dance, foot-ball, netball and tennis.

The street games will see children from some of the most deprived communities in the North West, many of whom play little or no sport at all, playing together and against each other in a day long sporting extravaganza.

More than 700 children aged under 16 are expected at the event being delivered by Sport 4 Life, a not for profit event management company.

Managing director John Dwan says: "A primary aim is to give young people the chance to enjoy the fun and experience of taking part in a major competition at one of the best facilities in the county.

"It is our intention to give young people who may not have played sport before a taste of the many benefits it can bring and encourage them to take up sporting activity regularly"

The day event will have its own opening and closing ceremonies and medals will be awarded to winning children and teams.

Any local child who is interested in taking part in the games is asked to call Adam Smith, the recreation officer at Poulton Neighbourhood Management, on 07748-981525.
