I AM sad to read in the press that some people are still in favour of the proposed Northern Heysham M6 link road.

Either they haven't seen the plans or they are misinformed, as I can't imagine anyone could be selfish enough to impose this monstrosity on so many people for so little benefit.

If the proposed route was going to solve our congestion problem and was a single carriageway cutting through beautiful countryside at ground level, it would be a hard pill to swallow but it could be argued that the benefits would outweigh the costs. But that is not the case.

The dual carriageway will be very close to residents' bedroom windows at Torrisholme and will cut the community in half but only save between two and 10 minutes off a journey between Morecambe and Lancaster or the M6. The clue is in the name - Heysham to the M6.

It is unthinkable to put a road of this height and width through a residential area, to say nothing of the beautiful countryside it would destroy. It would affect residents the whole length of its route and would be visible for miles around.

People who oppose the road are often accused of being NIMBYS, so why are so many people from all across the area against it?

If we are all totally honest, none of us wants a huge dual carriageway running through our back yard. So why isn't more effort being put into sustainable alternative transport solutions, which will save our countryside and stop more pollution before a few powerful people allow this road to be built?

I Gate, Lancaster.
