GARRETH O'Connor has vowed to gorge himself on goals this season after opening his account for Burnley in Austria.

The Irish midfielder, who scored 14 goals for Bournemouth last season, struck his first goal for the Clarets in Tuesday's 1-1 draw with Greek UEFA Cup qualifiers PAOK Salonika.

And O'Connor believes adopting a selfish streak can ensure his first season in the Championship is one to remember.

He said: "Getting off the mark is a big weight off my shoulders. It was the luckiest goal I've ever scored and I'm still not sure what part of the body it came off.

"But in the past couple of games I've had chances and been disappointed not to score, so to finally get the first one is a relief.

"In the past couple of seasons that I've adopted a bit of a selfish streak, whereas before that, managers told me I was guilty of passing it too much.

"Last year I turned greedy and managed to get 14 goals, so I will be looking to be greedy this year as well."

O'Connor, who feels the training trip to Austria has helped all five summer signings to bond well with their new team mates, is already discovering a huge leap in the standard of football at Burnley after leaving Dean Court to sign a three-year deal with the Clarets.

He added: "I spoke to the gaffer (Steve Cotterill) the other day and told him the step up has been a big difference.

"The training is sharper and better quality, so I think it will take a couple of games to get up to speed when the season starts, but hopefully I can do well."

Meanwhile, manager Steve Cotterill looks like being without all three of his injured players for Saturday's second and final game of the week-long tour, against Wacker Burghausen.

Michael Duff gave the Clarets a scare by limping out of the Salonika game with a tweaked knee ligament.

The defender did some light work with the physios yesterday to alleviate fears there could be a long-term problem.

However, with the Championship opener at Crewe now just nine days away, Duff, Danny Karbassiyoon (groin) and Micah Hyde (hamstring) are all unlikely to be risked against the Germans this weekend.

Cotterill confirmed: "Michael has tweaked his ligament and the chances are he won't be available for Saturday.

"Micah and Danny are both getting better, but the likelihood is that neither will be fit either at this moment in time.

"The big thing is I don't need to pick the team until Saturday morning, and the bigger picture is the game at Crewe the following weekend."
