MICHAEL Duff gave Burnley an injury scare as they began their Austrian tour with a 1-1 draw against Greek side PAOK Salonika.

Duff limped out of last night's friendly with a tweaked knee to join Danny Karbassiyoon (groin) and Micah Hyde (hamstring) in the treatment room.

And Clarets boss Steve Cotterill was this morning awaiting a full report on the defender's status.

He said: "Michael tweaked his medial knee ligaments and they are a real bind, but hopefully that won't be too bad.

"He has a nice day off today so we can assess him then."

Burnley earned a creditable draw thanks to Garreth O'Connor's second half equaliser, his first goal since joining the club from Bournemouth earlier this summer.

The Irish midfielder struck from Wade Elliott's cross after PAOK took an early lead in Abtenau.

Cotterill added: "I thought we were better than PAOK and that is the definitely best we have played in pre-season.

"It was a poor goal but the boys showed great character and it's great for Garreth because things probably haven't come off for him yet.

"He is an inch away from this and an inch away from that, but that was his best game for us and the Bournemouth connection worked well."

Meanwhile, young Burnley striker Kyle Lafferty, who joined the first team squad in Austria, is returning home tomorrow after receiving a prestigious call-up to the Northern Ireland U21 squad competing in next week's Elite Milk Cup.

Lafferty, a second year apprentice, will now miss the second game of the tour against Wacker Burghausen to compete in the four-team tournament in Ireland, where he could feature against Cameroon on Monday and Brazil a week today.

The USA complete the line-up for the annual tournament, which Danny Karbassiyoon played in two years ago and went on to share the Golden Boot award.

Cotterill said: "Kyle goes back tomorrow and it's a pity we couldn't give him a bit longer.

"It's been a good experience for him to come on tour, but it's quite a big tournament and I spoke to Lawrie Sanchez at the start of the week to see how important it was for Kyle because otherwise we would have kept him here for the second game."

Cotterill now looks to be ending the week one player down after hitting a brick wall in his efforts to bring any more trialists to Austria.

However, he revealed one player will definitely be joining the squad next week on Burnley's return to England.

The Clarets chief, who ran the rule over Russian Vladimir But against Salonika, said: "We have been waiting for a few telephone calls that haven't come and we are disappointed about that.

"There was someone we were looking to bring in this week, but it hasn't come to fruition.

"But we know we will be getting one in next week back home. I have been with that one for a little while now, so hopefully he will come in and do okay."
