BRIAN McGlynn (LET July 19) raises some interesting points. However, these points are often couched in terms existing in a domain between nebulous and obtuse.

He claims that "scientists and many medical people realise the concrete fact that there is nowhere else within our galaxy."

He feels it is also necessary that we must all "be taught" this alleged cast iron truth, "that this earth is heaven".

Maybe Mr McGlynn has other pertinent information to offer in support of his point rather than merely naming professions in such an arbitrary manner.

Please could he explain how mankind, a species which has travelled only as far as the moon, can so conclusively deduce such galaxy-wide "concrete facts" as these?

I would be most interested to know the methods used in these investigations.

It seems that belief in the absolute truth of science as we know it is as much a matter of faith as that of any Muslim or Christian.
