BLACKBURN with Darwen Council has scooped a national award for the services it provides to young families.

The Council was one of 17 across the country to pick up a badge of excellence for its Sure Start programme.

The Sure Start unit helps young families by bringing together Government policy and services on childcare, early years education, family support, health and help into employment for parents.

The award was presented to the Council by the Prime Minister Tony Blair's wife, Cherie Booth at a ceremony in London. She said: "The awards recognise the hard work and commitment of all the people in local communities who are helping to ensure children get the best start in life."

Councillor Mahfooz Hussain, the Council's executive member for education and lifelong learning, said: "This is very good news for young children and families in Blackburn and Darwen."
