A QUARRY in Rossendale is set to be transformed into a venue for outdoor sporting activities for the community.

The derelict Hurdles Quarry, off Bacup Road, Waterfoot, will be developed to provide leisure uses including archery, rock climbing, mountain biking and 4x4 driving.

Part of the quarry will be landscaped with a wildlife area also being created within the grounds.

A new access road will be created leading up to the quarry from St Michael's Centre, off Bacup Road, crossing some of Lench Road and using the bridge over the River Irwell.

The facilities will be used as part of a team building and corporate training exercise offered by St Mary's Chambers in Rawtenstall.

Rossendale councillors restricted opened times from 9.30am until 4.30pm.

Former Rossendale Mayor Councillor Jimmy Eaton said: "A lot of people go out of the valley to do the these type of sports on various terrain.

"There is nothing like this in the Valley at the moment.

"It's something that is needed in Rossendale."
