I AGREE with Dennis Marsden (Letters, December 12), that the spectre of a 10 per cent council tax increase in Hyndburn will cripple many residents, especially pensioners.

However, Hyndburn Borough Council First (the regeneration arm), has money to burn.

It has recently appointed no fewer than seven bureaucrats with fancy job titles like "local strategic partnership development officer," "community cohesion officer," and "voluntary sector liaison officer," all at average salaries of around £25,000, plus add-on costs like employer's NI, office staff, sick pay, holiday entitlement, relocation and car allowances etc; you name it, I bet they're getting it, and all at taxpayers' expense.

Will one of them tell us what he or she does all day to make Hyndburn "a better place to live, work and visit"?
