Ideal Isberg 2 Leigh East 14: CENTRE John Woods scored all of his side's points in an otherwise dreary game which nevertheless saw Leigh East leapfrog into sixth place in the Arriva Trains Conference Premier Division.

The East ace scored two tries and kicked three goals, all in the first half, to give his side a fighting chance of a coveted place in the end of season Top Six play offs.

Woods' first points came on 18 minutes when he took a pass from the base of a scrum to win a 60 yards sprint for the line with ease. He added the goal and two penalties before a blend of good luck, confidence and quick thinking saw him turn a loose ball into a try.

Woods' points were worth their weight in gold to East with Ideal Isberg, already doomed to relegation, proving a tough nut to crack. The Hull outfit, who have won just one league game this season, belied their lowly status with a committed performance full of hard work and effort and East had to defend their line for long spells to keep it intact.

In fact, Ideal applied so much pressure in the second half that East had to produce one of their best defensive displays of the season to keep them from what could easily have become an embarrassing defeat. But while East, who had Fletcher, Warhurst, Gunning and Kilshaw in top form, remained calm Ideal's panic rugby cost them dear.

In the first half the strong running of Warhurst, Gregson, Whiteside and Fletcher restricted the home side to a penalty goal while after the break top defensive work from Wingfield, Taylor, Lewis, Gunning and Stephens rattled the home side into errors.

While this was not one of Leigh East's more attractive performances it was still two good points won away from home and one which will add to the push for an end of season play off place.
