NATIONAL servicemen who completed their two years duty with pride are clamouring for a medal struck in their honour.
The Royal British Legion has produced a distinctive National Service Medal, a fitting tribute to people who served their country between 1939 and 1960.
Leigh branch president Jan Thomas, who is promoting the medal, available at £29.50, says his campaign has been so successful he ran out of application forms, but now has more in hand for anyone interested.
Ten per cent of the net cost of each medal goes to the Poppy Appeal Fund.
Jan said: "The National Service Act was introduced in 1939 and by December 1960 when it was abolished 5,300,000 young people had been conscripted into the armed forces, many from this area."
