STAN Ternent knows all about Dennis Wise's FA Cup pedigree.

The Clarets boss has remained firm friends with Wise since their paths first crossed at Chelsea.

Wise has since lifted the cup three times, twice for Chelsea in 1997 and 2000, and perhaps most memorably as part of the Wimbledon 'Crazy Gang' that defeated the mighty Liverpool in 1988.

And Clarets chief Ternent scoffs at suggestions that the Dons provided one of the biggest upsets ever at Wembley 16 years ago.

He said: "Dennis knows all about the FA Cup because he's a winner and even captained the Chelsea side that has won it.

"People still say Wimbledon was one of the biggest upsets, but people in the game know they were a fantastic team.

"They had very good players right throughout the side.

"Just to pick a few names, there was Dave Beasant, who went on to be an international goalkeeper and Vinnie Jones who captained Wales.

"Dennis himself played for England, while Andy Thorne and Eric Young were two quality centre backs.

"Nigel Winterburn started there and then played forever for one of the best back fours the country has ever seen in Arsenal.

"Glyn Hodges was one of the best left-footers the country has ever seen, John Fashanu was a handful and Alan Cork scored a lot of goals.

"Even Lawrie Sanchez, who scored the winning goal, is managing a national team now.

"They were terrific, so it's only because Wimbledon was such a small place that people see it as an upset.

"They all go on to be better players and internationals and sometimes you don't know what you have until further down the line.

"So it's not that much of a surprise, when you look at it, is it?"
