The announcement that two kilometres of towpath along the Leeds-Liverpool Canal is to be resurfaced and widened to create a multi-user route has been welcomed.

The stretch of towpath between Chorley town centre and the village of Adlington will be resurfaced and widened to two metres.

MP for Chorley Lindsay Hoyle, said the improvements would be good news for many groups.

He said: "This is very welcome news.

"The improvements will be beneficial for walkers, cyclists, fishermen and boaters, just to name a few. "An open towpath for all to enjoy will finally do justice to this important part of Chorley’s heritage.”

Other key improvements will include upgrades to washwalls and enhanced public access to the canal; all of which are expected to be completed by the end of April.
