Plans to redevelop a primary school have been given the go-ahead by council planning bosses.
School governors at the Diocese of Blackburn applied to Ribble Valley Borough Council in June 2021 to undertake changes at St James CE Primary School in Greenacre Street, Clitheroe.
The plans include the part-demolition of the existing infant school to create a separate nursery; the building of a new infant block; the creation of additional car parking; and access works off Greenacre Street.
The development seeks to improve safeguarding at the school on the infant and junior blocks, which are separated by a weir.

A heritage and planning statement submitted to the council said: “The proposals seek the redevelopment of the existing educational facility including part-demolition of the existing infant school to provide a standalone nursery facility.
“Also the erection of a new infant block, alongside additional car parking and soft and hard landscaping treatment.
“The proposal would not result in an increase of pupil numbers above the existing enrolment levels.
“The proposed new infant block is located to the rear of the nursery, in order to improve safeguarding and safety within the site.
“The new building is to be configured in a linear, single-storey building, whilst allowing for as much of the existing hard play area to be retained.
“The proposed floorspace is comprised of four classrooms, a hall/studio, a small group room, a staff room, and ancillary features including toilets, storage rooms, and cloakrooms.

“The existing infant building will be partially demolished, with the hall, classroom, toilet facilities, and storage areas retained, to provide a new standalone nursery facility."
Additionally, the statement says four electric vehicle charging points will be provided in the redeveloped car park, as well as a covered bike shed with space for up to 10 bikes.
Work must begin on the site within the expiration time of three years.
