An East Lancashire pre-school where children are confident to leave their parents at the door and where parents feel well informed about their child’s progress has retained its good Ofsted rating.

Chatburn Pre-School and Out of School Club, based at the CofE school in Sawley Road, Chatburn, was inspected over one day in February.

The pre-school received a good grade in all areas, retaining the same rating it received in 2018.

Inspectors praised the positive attitude towards learning the children showed and noted that staff put a strong focus on developing the children's confidence and well-being.

A report published on March 8 said: “Children engage well in their activities and show a positive attitude towards learning.

"The have access to a wide range of inviting resources that match their interests and stages of development.

“Babies confidently explore paint and make marks with large dabbing brushes. They beam widely at staff, who sensitively follow their lead in play.

“Children form secure attachments and demonstrate they are happy and safe. They are confident to leave their parents at the door. “

Inspectors also noted the children are beginning to manage their own feelings and behaviours, and are starting to understand how these impact others.

Parents are also said to be positive about the nursery and its staff, stating they are well-informed about their child’s progress and what they need to learn next.

To improve, inspectors say the nursery needs to “enhance staff’s understanding of practice of how to help children develop a wide and varied vocabulary.”

Safeguarding arrangements for the nursery are said to be effective, with an “open and positive” culture around safeguarding that puts children’s interests first.

The nursery, first registered in 1992, employs 18 members of childcare staff, 10 of whom hold early years qualifications at level 2 and above.

The next inspection is expected to be some time within the next six years.
