An East Lancashire borough council has launched a survey aimed at women and girls about physical activity and sport.

With International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8, the survey by Rossendale Borough Council is aimed at understanding and improving women and girls’ participation levels in sports and physical activities.

IWD is celebrated globally to acknowledge women’s achievements, raise awareness about discrimination, and inspire action for gender parity, this year focusses on the theme of #InspireInclusion.

The council want to develop programmes and policies that will inspire women and girls to become involved in sport and physical activity.

Sport England research shows there is a gender gap when it comes to physical activity amongst men and women with 39 per cent of women aged 16 and over are not active enough to get the full health benefits of sport and physical activity, compared to 35 per cent of men.

Councillor Samara Barnes said: “I’m delighted Rossendale Borough Council are undertaking this important piece of work.

“I read a while ago that women and girls undertook less exercise in the winter months as they don’t feel safe running or walking in the dark.

“We need to know the lived experience of women and girls in the valley so we can create an offer that works for them.”

The council want to hear from women and girls from across Rossendale whether they currently participate in any physical activity or not.

The survey aims to uncover crucial insights, including:

  • Barriers hindering women and girls from participating in sports, health, and physical activity sessions
  • Motivations that drive women and girls to participate in physical activities
  • Aspects that matter most to women and girls when engaging in physical activities
  • Desires for more opportunities and aspects to reduce
  • Key factors that would enhance engagement for women and girls

The council hope to gain valuable perspectives, to help strengthen policies, networks, and programmes. The information gathered will also guide ongoing research for the creation of a comprehensive Physical Activity strategy for Rossendale.

The survey is open until April 5 and can be found here: https://bit.ly/RBCIWD24

Councillor Barnes added: “Your input is crucial to helping us build a more inclusive and equitable community for everyone, so please do complete the survey and share with your female friends and family.”
