A social club in Chorley is hosting a ‘warm hub’ at the end of the month to help locals as energy bills soar.

St Joseph’s Community Club, in School Lane, Brinscall, announced that every Monday the club will be transforming into a safe and warm hub with tea, coffee, lunch, and entertainment.

The social club said it will be open to provide somewhere for people to go in the cold, winter months, when they cannot afford to turn the heating on at home due to spiralling fuel costs.

Ian, the club steward, who asked not to have his surname included, said: “It’s open to absolutely anyone. Anyone who wants somewhere warm to spend the day is welcome.

“With the increased cost of living and energy bills, we decided to open this up to help people out within the community.

“We saw that Lancashire County Council are starting to fund these, so we thought we’ll do our bit to help out, even though we haven’t got any funding from them at the minute.

“There is an older community in this area, so we thought it’s important to support those people.”

After announcing it will be hosting a warm hub, several people have offered the club their support and donated books and games.

“We’ve had a great response so far and lots of locals have made donations so that people who come to the warm hub will have things to keep them occupied,” Ian added.

“We came up with the idea to launch this a few weeks ago and we already had the space and all the facilities, so it’s been quite easy to set up.

“We thought it would be something great to do for the community and the local women’s institute have even offered to give a hand.

“It’s great when groups and residents in the community come together like this.”

Warm hubs are spaces within the local community where people can find a safe, warm and friendly environment to socialise and enjoy food and drink.

St Joseph’s Community Club will be opening its doors every Monday from 10am to 4pm from October 31 all the way to March 27 next year.

There will be a small library of books available as well as card games, snooker, darts and jigsaws.

Hot drinks and lunch will also provided.
