THE newly-formed Pendle Hippodrome Theatre Company is to tackle its first ever musical, with a production of Jekyll and Hyde.

The show - which is also currently running in London's West End -- will be staged at the Colne-based theatre from April 22 to 26.

Taking the demanding role of Jekyll is Jon Ranwell, who performed at the Cambridge Theatre in London during his time as a professional actor.

Producing the musical is Haword Raw, who has previously produced the show at the Lowry Theatre, Salford.

Before St Johns and Colne Operatic societies amalgamated, both had made independent plans for their next productions in case the merger didn't go ahead. These arrangements in the form of two shows already booked are being honoured.

The musical Jekyll and Hyde is the first, and a production of 42nd Street will be coming later in the year.

Jekyll and Hyde is a musical based on the classic Robert Louis Stevenson story Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and has superb lyrics by Leslie Bricusse.

The story of the split personality - with all its terrible consequences - of Dr Jekyll will be familiar to many people, but add some beautiful music and lyrics to the story and you have a whole new approach which makes great theatre.

Publicity officer Marilyn Tunbridge said: "The music has a distinct Les Mis' feel to it.

Musical director Matt Leedam seems to have a flair for this type of score having been musical director for Les Miserables a couple of years ago. One of the musical numbers This is the moment' is well known but the majority are not and a score of this nature takes many hours of study to obtain the correct interpretation and put across to the cast at rehearsal.

"Also adding his own distinctive production touches is award-winning producer Howard Raw. Watch out for a few surprises that will leave you amazed.

"This is the start of a whole new era for musical theatre locally and we hope that support will come from far and wide to make this historic event something to remember"
