A woman has died in a serious crash that closed a motorway services slip road.

At around 7.45am on Wednesday, a Toyota C-HR was travelling southbound on the M6 when it exited the motorway at Charnock Richard Services and crashed into a metal fence.

Despite the best efforts of emergency services the driver, a woman in her 50s, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Sgt Phil Baxendale, of Lancashire Constabulary Tactical Operations, said: “This was a tragic incident where a woman has lost her life and my thoughts are with her family and friends at this time.

“I would appeal to anyone who saw this vehicle, or who has dashcam footage of it, either on the motorway before the collision or the collision itself, to get in touch.

Anyone with information should contact police on 101 quoting log 0236 of Sept 22.

The exit slip road to the motorway services was closed throughout the morning.

Highways, police and the ambulance service were on scene dealing with the incident, which happened at the Charnock Richard Services between junctions 28 and 27 of the M6.

A spokesperson for Highways said: "The M6 southbound exit slip road into the services at Charnock Richard Services (CharnockRichard/between J28 and J27) is currently closed due to a serious collision.

"Traffic Officers, Lancs Road Police and NW Ambulance are currently at the scene."

A spokesperson for the police said: "Motorway services closure - we have closed the Charnock Richard services south on the M6 near Chorley, due to a serious road traffic collison.

"Please be aware of this when travelling in that area. We will update yourselves once we have reopened it. Thank you."
