UPDATE: The road closure in place at New Hall Lane and Brockholes Brow has now been resolved and the road is back open.
A major road has been closed due to an accident.
Police have closed the A59 New Hall Lane both ways between Blackpool Road and Thirlmere Road at the top of Brockholes Brow.
It is believed there has been a crash close to the Shell Garage.
A spokesperson for the police said: "It looks like a single vehicle incident, which occurred at around 12.05pm.
"We’ll put out an update when the road has reopened."
Congestion is building back to the M6 and police are asking people to avoid the areas or find alternative routes while they deal with the incident.
The spokesperson added: "Please be aware that there is currently a road closure in place at New Hall Lane and Brockholes Brow whilst police deal with a road traffic accident.
"We are asking the public to avoid the area and find an alternative route."
The AA traffic website first reported the incident at around 11.15am on Tuesday with their site stating: "Road closed, accident, queueing traffic, congestion to M6.
"Road closed and queueing traffic due to accident on A59 New Hall Lane both ways between A5085 Blackpool Road and Thirlmere Road.
"Congestion to the M6. Near to the Shell Garage."
