HERE is a block of shops which have long disappeared but which may well bring back memories for more ‘mature’ readers.

Taken in 1963 you are looking up Penny Street in Blackburn and on the left is the junction with Old Chapel Street.

Situated on that corner was Jack Whitaker’s outfitters which was a hugely popular shop in the Sixties.

Further along Penny Street you can see Mayer’s TV and electrical shop which was another well-known Blackburn shop back in the day and had a couple of its vans parked outside.

Perhaps there are other shops along Penny Street which you used to frequent. If you have any memories of them, or any photographs, then do get in touch. Email bygones@nqnw.co.uk as we’d love to share your photos with our readers.

This picture doesn’t record anything specific, it was probably taken to illustrate a story about traffic at the time, but now it provides a priceless glimpse into the past.
