Blackburn has some of the best kebab houses around. Here are five kebab places you may not have heard of.

Zakzaki, Unit 2 Watford St

This little unit has fast become the go to place to get some great grilled chicken wings (35 for £10 or 15 for £5) and seekh kebabs (20 for £10). Order ahead and simply pick-up and warm at home. They regularly have some offers on drumsticks and mixed grill platters for the whole family. On the downside you have to pick it up. Small effort for what are some quality fresh kebabs. Watford Street is just off Victoria Street. (take a left at the Shandaar)

Kebab Express, Johnson Street

You really need to go back to the eighties to find a more traditional kebab joint than this. Whilst you can order some of the traditional items on the menu there really is no need. Simply ask for a pair of chaplee kebabs and some seekh kebabs in naan and that should settle you down for the night. Kebab Express serves up the best naans in town – bar naan. Few places put such an effort to ensure your naan is fresh and soft as this. Best to eat them fresh and warm.

Al-Quds, Whalley Range

Serving up a kobeda kebab is no easy task and few in recent years have been able to master it. For those not aware the kobeda kebab is a middle-eatern/Turkish offering and locally it has come with an added level of spices and signature sauces. This is due to customers being so used to wanting that extra ‘kick’. in their food round these parts. Al-Quds kobedas are decent and they also come with a mix of chicken tikka and lamb chops. Do order well in advance as things can get hectic at busy times.

Jaffa Blackburn, Redlam

The Shawarma kebab is only available in a handful of places in the area. Jaffa’s have both the chicken and the lamb varieties for the kebab connoisseurs amongst us. The lamb is not always available as it tends to sell out quite quickly so best to get an order in early. It comes with pitta, naan or rice and then an assortment of combinations and all for well under £6. A variety of delicious fillings from humus to special Jaffa sauces helps to make the kebab a one-off experience.

Sahad Kebab House, Audley Range

When you travel to the other side of town for a kebab you are either desperate or the kebab must be pretty decent. The Sahad is frequented by those who like their meals to hark back to the days when there were a handful of places that still made a good value mixed grill. The range of curries here is also on par with the best coming out of the larger more expensive curry houses in Blackburn and Darwen.
