Hundreds more people have tested positive for the coronavirus in East Lancashire in the last 24 hours.

More than 40,000 people across the six boroughs have now tested positive for the coronavirus after 584 new positives were registered since Saturday.

In updated figures from the Government's coronavirus dashboard, released on Saturday afternoon, Rossendale has recorded 4,461 positive test results after another 47 people tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours.

In the Ribble Valley, following another 59 confirmed positives, 3,208 people are now known to have had the virus, while in Pendle that figure rose to 7,070 after another 63 people tested positive since Saturday.

Hyndburn's figure has risen to 5,411 following another 78 positive tests.

However it's Burnley and Blackburn that lead the way after 150 new infections were recorded in Burnley, taking the total there to 7,327, and 187 in Blackburn with Darwen, meaning the total number of positive test results recorded in the borough is now standing at 13,091.

This means, since the pandemic began almost a year ago, 40,568 people have tested positive for the virus.

Despite the high figure, a positive test result does not always equate to a severe case of Covid-19 and does not necessarily result in that person needing hospital treatment.

It is also worth remembering that any one person may have had multiple tests, so the figures are not necessarily representative of 40,568 single individuals.
