RATHER than an explosion to topple it, demolition teams took down the steeple of the former United Reformed Church on Blackburn’s Audley Range stone by stone in 1989.
The steeple was the last visible sign that a church had stood on the site which was being cleared to make way for additional housing and road remodelling.
If you look closely you can see one of the demolition men being hoisted to the top of the steeple in a ‘cage’ attached to the giant crane which dominated the skyline.
The stone was being salvaged for use elsewhere.
Churchgoers had amalgamated with the congregation at Brownhill United Reformed Church to continue their worship.
