VIEWERS from as far away as Florida, Hong Kong and Australia tuned in to watch a Cumbrian town turn on its Christmas lights.

Instead of wrapping up in hats and gloves to see their town illuminated, this year the people of Penrith watched the annual switch-on from the comfort of their own homes on Saturday.

More than 6,000 people tuned in to watch on Facebook, YouTube and discoverpenrith.co.uk and the video had more than 20,000 views within 24 hours.

Despite lockdown calling off the popular event, Penrith Businesses Improvement District (BID) and Discover Penrith decided they would kick off the festivities virtually.

Philippa Ball, of Penrith BID, said: “Wow. We have been blown away with the response to the Penrith Christmas Lights. Penrith is sparkling.

“It has been really special to read through the comments and to know we have made people smile in the most difficult of years.”

Philippa thanked sponsors Ghyllmount Dental, Penrith Lottery and Leo Group and said a “huge thanks” to businesses in the town as without their generosity, the lights could not happen. “They help the town, so I’d urge everyone to help them this Christmas by shopping local,” she said.

Local people can find Christmas news, and share pictures and stories to get people into the festive spirit, on the Christmas in Penrith Facebook group.

Philippa added: “What is lovely is the community spirit bringing people together - people are sharing their lights photos which is just what we wanted.”

Money for the Christmas lights is being raised through the sales of A Year in Penrith calendar, which is available in various shops in the town. Photographer Lee Benson donated his images and artwork.
