LANDMARK buildings across the region will be lit up red tonight as part of a global campaign calling for the Covid-hit live events industry to get back to work.

Event professionals from thousands of cities across more than 25 countries will come together to unite for a day of action, under the #WeMakeEvents campaign.

The campaign is an international movement which aims highlight that the live events sector is struggling during the Covid-19 pandemic and is in need of support.

It champions those working in the events industry, creating awareness and understanding of their threats and issues, and raises money to give immediate support for the individuals, families and industry charities.

Tonight, venues and structures including Darlington Hippodrome and Sunderland’s Stadium of Light will be illuminated red with the #WeMakeEvents signature expression of Red Alert.

In 60 selected locations across the country, a single white beam of light will be projected into the air, each symbolising 10,000 potential job losses.

Some venues will project images of what would have been taking place inside onto the outside, as a reminder of lost events

The action will begin in New Zealand and travel around the world at 8pm local time.

Among those in the region expected to take part are Sunderland AFC and Beacon Of Light Foundation, Rainton Arena, Gateshead Stadium, Boiler Shop, Utilita Arena Newcastle, Newcastle University, Rockliffe Hall, Event Northumbria, Darlington Hippdrome, Alphabetti Theatre, Hadrian’s Tower, NE Volume Bar, Playhouse in Whitley Bay, Tyne Theatre and Prohbition Cabaret Bar.
