This, believe it or not, is a photograph of Blackburn town centre lying virtually hidden beneath a thick cloud of smoke.
This was just another normal day in the era before smokeless fuel and clean air legislation came into force.
With homes and factories all relying on coal for power and heat day would very quickly turn to night as the smog descended. No wonder then, that many folk in East Lancashire, especially children, developed asthma-related ailments.
