A TEENAGER whose body was found in the River Irwell yesterday has been named as Bolton schoolboy Adam Kay.

The 14-year-old was last seen in the water near Clifton Country Park on Tuesday, June 2.

His disappearance sparked a huge response from emergency services with the park being evacuated and a massive search operation getting underway at around 3.30pm.

Tragically the boy's body was found by underwater search teams a short time later.

Adam's sister, Jessica, posted a tribute to her younger brother online.

She said: "Words can’t describe how heartbroken I am right now.

"I’m not the only one who will say this but I’m gonna miss you so much- you being annoying, winding me up and your laugh. You were an amazing uncle and my babies will always know who their uncle is and how much of a clown you were.

"Love you millions, R.I.P Adam. Say hi to dad for me, love you both."

Adam was a pupil at Harper Green School in Farnworth who released a statement which read: "It is with great sadness that I report that the young boy who lost his life in the River Irwell yesterday was Adam Kay, a Harper Green student.

"Adam was a popular student and I know that he was a good friend to many of you. On behalf of the entire Harper Green community we offer our condolences and support to Adam's family and friends and if anyone feels that they need any support please contact the school via office@harpergreen.net"

Teachers from the school have paid further tribute to Adam.

Headteacher Stephen Gribbon said:

“Adam only joined our school this year but he very soon became popular due to his kind nature.

"Adam always had a smile on his face and his boundless energy was infectious. In school Adam was always laughing and joking with his friends and had time for everyone.

"Adam’s innate ability to befriend anyone that had the pleasure to meet him meant that people liked being around him and the loss of such a young and charismatic individual will affect so many people.

"My thoughts are with Adam’s family and friends and I offer the support of all the Harper Green community at this incredibly sad time.”

Deputy Headteacher Sally Heppenstall said:

“Even though he had only been at Harper Green School a short period of time, Adam very quickly became a valued and well liked member of our school community.

"I will remember him for his infectious laugh.  He would spend breaks and lunchtimes on the yard and in the year team with his close group of friends laughing and joking around.

"He was a loyal friend whose tragic passing will affect so many.  My thoughts are with his family and friends."

Many have taken to social media to pay tribute to Adam, posting their prayers and feelings on the tragic incident.

Replying to Harper Green’s post, Carl Heatley said: “Sending my love to all the staff and students. As a school where I started my career in 2001 I cannot express my deepest sympathies enough.

“I lost a student a year ago today so I know how you all must be feeling.”

Another user added “So sad thinking of all his family and friends” while another said “RIP Adam. We are all thinking of you.”

A fundraising page has been set up to help cover the funeral costs- and has already received an influx of donations.

The GoFundMe, set up by James Weston, is aiming to raise £2,000.

The description reads: “Adam Kay aged 14 lost his life to a tragic accident on the 2/6/2020. We are raising money to help his family towards funeral costs. Please help this family out.”
