WARRINGTON families are among those stranded abroad amid the coronavirus pandemic as most airlines cancel all of their flights.

Judy Humphrys, from Great Sankey, is stuck in New Zealand after flying out via Singapore at the end of February.

Judy, aged 68, went on the five-week holiday with her college friend Doreen Bradley as her husband Dave does not like long haul flights.

The friends had a 'fantastic' holiday and were due to fly home at the end of March, arriving back in the UK on April 1.

Judy's daughter Heidi said: "They have been in constant contact with their tour operator and last week were told they had to return home on the first available flight, which was scheduled for Tuesday morning, New Zealand time.

"Unfortunately the flight was going through Singapore and they have cancelled all flights in and out of the country until at least mid April.

"They are currently in a hotel in Christchurch and are being well looked after.

"We are missing them very much but they’re both in good spirits and we feel lucky that with modern technology we can keep in touch with daily video calls and messages.

"This is how we’re keeping in touch with my dad, who is only round the corner from us, so it is just the same!"

Judy will spend her 69th birthday in New Zealand on April 5 but her family are planning lots of celebrations for when she returns.
