A WRESTLING promoter from Rhyl has been leading the way in his community to ensure the essentials for people self-isolating.

Steve Saxon, who is site manager of The Red Lion in Penyffordd, near Wrexham, is using the pub’s role as a community hub to support villagers during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Following a meeting on Monday, volunteers were asked to look after individual streets in the village and as The Journal went to press the first meals from the Red Lion were delivered to homes in the area.

Mr Saxon, originally of Rhyl, said: “So if you’re housebound then you can still have a decent home cooked meal.

“Penyffordd is a small village and the Red Lion is a hub for the community. We have several things that we have instigated to support people who are self-isolating.”

However, for Mr Saxon - who is also the founder of Ffrith Beach Park Arena stalwarts Britannia Wrestling Promotions - it’s not just the essentials that are important with the prospect of many: days homebound.

Mr Saxon added “ We had a successful night of wrestling on Saturday, March 14. Defying the virus, we had a packed house in Prestatyn.

“We’ve received so many public messages of thanks for us running a night of entertainment to allow people to forget the situation at the moment.

A former wrestler who retired four years ago, Mr Saxon intends to lace up his boots once again and to return to the ring to help life spirits at ‘Abdication’ on Sunday, April 12 at the Ffrith Arena - subject to events of that size being allowed to go ahead.

Mr Saxon, 38, said: “I’m coming out of retirement because of a long standing feud with an ‘old friend’ and because I want to show people that the media scaremongering isn’t going to hold us Brits back
