A DISQUALIFIED driver reached speeds of over 90mph as he tried to escape from police.

Blackburn magistrates heard in the course of the high-speed pursuit Jordan George Maddocks drove straight over a mini-roundabout without slowing and shot a red light forcing another car to brake heavily to avoid a collision.

Maddocks, 26, of Bolton Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and without insurance. He was committed on bail to be sentenced at Preston Crown Court on April 6.

Tracy Yates, prosecuting, said police saw the car being driven by Maddocks at about 9.40pm on Sunday. A check on the police national computer showed the car was registered as off road and to an Asian man.

"As soon as they indicated for him to stop he sped off, reaching 75mph in a 30mph zone," said Mrs Yates.

She said the VW Golf headed out of Blackburn on Preston Old Road before driving straight across the mini-roundabout at the junction with Livesey Branch Road without slowing.

It reached speeds of 80mph as it approached the Riley Green Switch where it sped through a traffic signal at 60mph, forcing another motorist to take evasive action.

Maddocks increased speed to 90mph before losing control and going into a high-speed spin near the junction with Hoghton Lane.

"The defendant exited the car and jumped over a hedge but an officer gave chase and detained him a short distance away," said Mrs Yates.
