The family of a 'local legend' who ran one of the most popular takeaways in Yate have paid tribute after he sadly passed away earlier this month.

Jefferey George Tovey, affectionately known as Mr T, died on February 7.

He had run Mr T's on Wellington Road since 1986 after moving in to the town when he spotted a gap in the market.

When interviewed by the Gazette in 2016, he said: "Over the years I have seen my customers grow up and bring their own children in.

“It’s nice to see families grow as much as I’ve seen Yate grow over the years.”

His family have invited members of the community to attend a special funeral at Westerleigh Crematorium next month.

Speaking to the Gazette, his family said: "He was a local legend who was loved by many included all his staff over the years and the community.

"Sadly his retirement got cut very short due to being diagnosed with terminal cancer in November.

"Jeff sadly passed away at home with his loving family by his side.

"Mr T's funeral is on Monday 9th March at Westerleigh Crematorium at 11am, all are welcome."

The takeaway was due to close on Christmas Eve last year, but unexpectedly closed earlier in December.

He had run the shop with his wife Fran, step-daughter Mandy and other long-serving staff.
