A main road had to be closed as a water mains burst, flooding the street.

Greenway Street in Darwen was closed on Monday night after a 12 inch water mains burst, and remains closed on Tuesday.

The road was shut off between Heys Lane and Preston Street while United Utilities carried out repair work.

A spokesperson for Blackburn with Darwen's roads department said: "For health and safety reasons, and due to damage caused by the force of water when the pipe burst, a road closure has been put in place.

"Water supplies have been re-zoned around the area and most supplies have returned to normal, it is estimated that 1,500 properties were without water earlier in the evening."

Lancashire Telegraph:

Households in the area were affected for several hours while United Utilities used 15 water on wheels tankers to pump water into the mains in order to keep the supply flowing.

Councillor Roy Davies said: "Yet again a leak has caused water to be switched off for hundreds of households in Darwen.

"This is possibly the third time in two years, is it not time that United Utilities replaced all the old pipes in this area?"

A spokesperson for United Utilities said: “All customers in the BB3 area of Darwen have had their water supply restored after a water main burst on Greenway Street yesterday evening.

"The repair to the main had to be delayed slightly to allow the gas company to survey a high pressure gas main that was located in the area of the repair.

"The road was damaged in the incident and will remain closed while repairs are completed.

"We’re working as fast as we can to get things back to normal and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
