AN ARMY Lance Corporal is set to run the length of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal to raise money for safety measures after the death of his cousin.

Kyle Haworth wants fences to be put in place after Shaun Rigby was found dead in November 2016 in the water near Eanam Wharf, Blackburn.

Now the 29-year-old from Blackburn has set up a team of four people from the army – with two people running and another two doing support – to take on the arduous 127-mile course.

He said: “We will be setting off from Leeds after the Remembrance Service on November 10 and then doing the 44.8-mile journey to Skipton and Colne.

“The second leg will take us to Eanam Wharf then there we will be having a memorial service for Shaun and then we have the journey to Wigan and then onto Liverpool.

“Since the first anniversary I have wanted to improve the safety on waterways.

“There have been lots of people who have fallen in the water and it just needs to be safer.

“We need to have more high barriers across canal hotspots as it would cost councils a fortune across the county.

“Maybe we could also get some throw ropes put up.”

Kyle said the family still are coming to terms with Shaun’s death.

“Shaun was a quiet lad who kept himself to himself. He would socialise once a month and because I was in the army I did not see him much.”

The former Our Lady and St John's School pupil will be also fundraising for the Mind charity. He said: “By doing this I hope that other families will not have to go through what we have had to.

“Mental health is a bit of a taboo subject and it is a massive thing in society with advancements in social media and it means people are more susceptible to problems.

“You don’t realise that there may be underlying issues and I know I would want to turn back time to try to see Shaun again.”
