THE Oswestry branch of the Labour Party will be campaigning publicly in the town on Saturday about the party’s stance on issues ahead of a potential general election.

Group members of the Oswestry and District Labour Party branch ill be handing out leaflets and talking to members of the public about their views regarding the protection of the NHS, the effects of austerity cuts on the Oswestry area and how the Labour Party hopes to tackle climate change.

After the withdrawal of the whip from 21 Tory MPs, Boris Johnson’s government no longer has a majority in Parliament, meaning a general election could be called after October 31 – the deadline for striking a deal to leave the European Union.

Members will also be encouraging people to register to vote, after eight million eligible people failed to register in time to vote in the European elections in May.

Chrissie Roberts, treasurer of the Oswestry and District Labour branch, believes it is an important time for the group to be engaging with the people of Oswestry.

“It is urgent, in light of an imminent general election, that we have a regular presence in Oswestry over the coming weeks and months,” she said.

“Previous outings with our Red Gazebo have given us the opportunity to engage with and listen to a wide range of issues and concerns that local people have.

“We have also been able to knock on the head some myths and misconceptions about the Labour Party.”
