THE whole of the city is coming together to help raise £500,000 for lifesaving treatment for a five-year-old boy suffering from leukaemia.

Oscar Saxelby-Lee underwent a stem cell transplant in May after being diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

But the leukaemia has returned and the only option left for the family, who are facing a race against time, is an overseas trial in Singapore called CAR-T or a second stem cell transplant. Neither option is available on the NHS.

Oscar’s mum, Olivia Saxelby said: “Every time we’ve had good news, it’s been shocking, horrific news to follow. We have now been put in a predicament where we have a price to pay for our child’s life.”

Breaking down in tears, the 24-year-old said: “We need to find a lot of money to try and get him some treatment outside the NHS, because they won’t offer him (anything) unless he reaches post-12 months after a stem cell transplant.”

Ms Saxelby added Oscar sometimes “gets really upset with life” and it was heart-breaking for him not to be able to do what other little boys his age take for granted.

The story has prompted a huge response from the community, with the fundraising appeal now standing at £83,000 and with many events organised to help Oscar.

Sarah Wurmli, a member of Worcestershire Mums Network, is putting together a fundraising event. There will be a cake competition, cake stall, auction prizes and raffles to be won. Sarah is appealing to the public for a venue to hold the fundraiser, which will take place on October 12.

If you’d like to donate a raffle or auction prize, or are interested in offering a venue for the day, email sarahwurmli@gmail.com.

Owners of Sabre Skills and Training will be hosting a family fun day at Pitmaston Primary School, in Malvern Road. The training business will be holding first aid sessions for the public to attend at a cost of £5. A cake sale, raffle and other activities will be available during the day on Sunday, October 13 from 10am to 3pm.

On Thursday, October 11 the Horn and Trumpet will be hosting a charity event between 7pm and midnight. The pub, in Angel Street, has organised a raffle and an array of activities, such as chest waxing and face painting.
