A VIGIL is due to be held in Bury town centre in opposition to the Indian government’s renewed oppression of Kashmir, a Muslim-majority region of India.
The peaceful vigil will be held in Kay Gardens tomorrow.
Organisers say they are standing in solidarity with Muslims in Indian-administered Kashmir.
Cllr James Daly, the leader of the Conservative Group on Bury Council, is due to speak at the vigil, which has been organised by Shahbaz Mahmood.
Mr Mahmood said: "It is only recently that the world was shocked by the annexation of Kashmir by India when it decided to strike out Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, stripping Kashmir of its special status.
"We are concerned about the violation of human rights and international law. Muslims are being persecuted.
"We will not ignore the continuing persecution of Muslims in India.
"Bury is calling upon the British parliament to prioritise its agenda to protect the lives of Muslims in Kashmir."
The vigil is due to be staged between 2pm-4pm.
