BURNLEY – 1 SUNDERLAND – 3

BURNLEY’S poor cup form continued as they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Sunderland after losing 3-1 at Turf Moor.

The Clarets took the lead in the first half through Jay Rodriguez, but the League One side hit back as Will Grigg latched on to a loose Danny Drinkwater interception to fire beyond Joe Hart.

Sunderland flew out of the blocks in the second half as they scored two goal in five minutes through Tom Flanagan and George Dobson.

It took 10 minutes for Rodriguez to make his mark on his first competitive start since resigning for the club.

Drinkwater showed exactly what he can bring to the side as his first time ball forward split the Sunderland defence allowing Matej Vydra space to run into.

The Czech international slipped in strike partner Rodriguez, who found the far side of the goal with ease.

Drinkwater was involved throughout the first half as the Chelsea loanee showed his class on numerous occasions when looking to link with Burnley’s forwards.

Half way through the first period, Burnley could have and probably should have been two goals up after striking both posts in quick succession.

Some neat play around the edge of the box ended up with the ball at Lennon’s feet, his shot beat Lee Burge put found the foot of the post.

On the rebound, the ball was gathered by Vydra and his effort hit the other post to keep the score at 1-0.

Sunderland equalised with 10 minutes of the first half remaining as Grigg found the back of the net.

Drinkwater inadvertently played the ball in to Grigg’s path as he slid in to intercept a pass on the edge of the box – the Northern Irishman found the top corner under no pressure.

Grigg was beyond the Burnley defenders, but was onside as Drinkwater got the last touch on the ball.

It was a whirlwind start to the second half as the visitors took the lead after two minutes through captain Flanagan.

Lynden Gooch fired in a shot and Hart parried straight on to the head of Flanagan for him to give his side the lead.

Jack Ross’ side doubled their lead a couple of minutes later after they work a corner to Dobson on the penalty spot and he slotted through a crowd of players for 3-1.

Burnley built a bit of pressure as they looked for a way back into the game and two chances fell to Kevin Long, but Burge was equal to both of his headed efforts.

The Clarets came close to getting a goal back through Vydra after some good link-up play by Chris Wood and Rodriguez, but Vydra chose not to shoot first time.

Sunderland held on comfortably to progress to the third round of the League Cup.
