A TEENAGER is set to stand trial accused of two offences of attempted murder.

Nasar Ahmed, 18, of Reedyford Road, Nelson, appeared at Preston Crown Court when he denied attempting to murder Junaid Arif and Hamza Yasser, both 19.

The court heard Mr Arif lost the fingers on one hand and suffered significant leg injuries after tendons were severed in an incident on Brunswick Street, Nelson, on July 16, while Mr Yasser suffered a 20 cm slash wound to his back, cuts to his shin, fingers and head. Three other men were also injured during the incident.

Ahmed spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, nationality and enter his not guilty pleas in the short hearing.

A trial date was set for January 6.

Three 19-year-old men, from Nelson, and two 19-year-old men, from Burnley, arrested on suspicion of assault in connection with the disorder which saw police given temporary powers to stop and search people or vehicles without suspicion, were released on bail until August 14.
