HUNDREDS of people lined the streets of Adlington at the weekend for its annual carnival.

A Spitfire float was one of the main attractions of the Saturday festivities and organisers were delighted with the hoards of people who supported the festival.

Secretary Lois Birtwistle said: “The event went extremely well and there was a great turnout on both days.

“We had some wonderful weather so that allowed people to go onto the park and enjoy the music.

“The parade through the town was great and the Spitfire float was really impressive.

“It is a community event and that is what I am passionate about.

“People got together to put on great displays with the floats and some people were even spending £1,000 to make them look great and they really made an effort.

“It was nice to see people of all ages young and old and families getting involved.

“There was really something for everyone with the music workshops, Punch and Judy show, and people walking on stilts.”

Organisers said the Preston North End mascot and lots of different characters kept children entertained, while Woody and Buzz Lightyear took a break from their Toy Story escapades to be in the parade.

Adam and Scott Thomas (of Emmerdale and Love Island fame) were the celebrities at the event too.

Lois said: “They got mobbed a bit with lots of people wanting to get photographs taken with them especially because of Love Island being popular at the moment.”

It is the 47th year the event has been running and Lois believes it is going from strength to strength.

She added: “We have only had one year where it did not take place but it is going to carry on next year. There was a great crowd on Saturday and a good one on Sunday but I think that was due to the road closures from the Ironman event and also there were other events in the village and elsewhere.

“We want to thank the people of Adlington and surrounding areas for coming and supporting us in making it a success. It was great to see people lining the streets when the parade was going around the town.”
