FIREFIGHTERS are currently at the scene of a large fire in Rishton.

Crews from Accrington and Blackburn were called to the blaze, which had taken hold in a garage, at around 6.30pm this evening.

Although the fire has now been extinguished, firefighters from Accrington remain on the scene at the top of Walmesley Street to dampen down the area.

The fire is thought to have started in one of the garages before spreading to a further two.

A spokesman from Blackburn fire station said: "We were called to assist crews from Accrington with the garage fires. Two of the garages were empty, but one did contain a car.

"Two of the units were destroyed while the other one was partially damaged."

Lancashire Telegraph:

It is not known at this time if the fire was deliberate.

An eye-witness reported seeing four fire engines parked close to the fire, and at least half-a-dozen firefighters on the scene.

She said: "I was walking home from work when I first saw the fire. I don't know what started it, but it is insane to see the flames going up.

"I think it must have broken out in a garage as there are some old units there. I just hope nobody is hurt."
