A COUNCILLOR believes speed indicator devices will be a step towards stopping cars racing along some of a town’s most dangerous roads.

Cllr Sara Britcliffe, who represents the St Andrews ward in Oswaldtwistle, feared that someone was going to get seriously hurt or killed before highways chiefs took action.

However, she met with county councillor Andrew Snowden, who is the lead member for highways and transport, to raise her concerns over Harvey Street, Mayfield Avenue and Union Road.

She was relieved that speed indicator devices, which record and flash up a driver's speed, have been installed across the town.

She said: “We have always had problems with cars speeding through the town.

“I took county councillor Andrew Snowden to the streets to see it at school drop-off and pick-up times and when it is at its worst. He has obviously gone back to the council to get something sorted. There was an incident the other week on Harvey Street when a young girl had to be taken to hospital.

“After speaking to the residents I think it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt or killed but it should not have to come to this before Lancashire County Council take action.

“The good thing with these devices is that the speeds are being recorded and they will be able to find out how fast the cars are travelling.”

Cllr Britcliffe was worried about kids coming out of the nearby schools such as St Mary's Primary School and Rhyddings Business and Enterprise College.

She added: “I think the speed indicator devices makes drivers more aware of their speeds and they may slow down when they see them.

“But the main thing is that the data will prove there is a problem in the area.

“This is what we have been crying out for for years.

“There was a problem on Union Road as there was a speed camera on there but it was taken down when they installed a roundabout. It shows that the county council are listening.”

Cllr Snowden said: “It is great that Sara and her dad Peter (Britcliffe) brought me down to see the issue first hand.

“There were some irresponsible drivers there and we need to build evidence trail before we can do anything and that included incident records from police.

“I would urge people to be more responsible and respect the communities they are driving in especially at schools.”
