THERE has in the last few days, been deposited in the homes around Clitheroe, what can only be described as political propaganda from the Conservatives and the Liberal parties.

Each one carries a statement about how these political parties propose the way forward in developing the land which holds Clitheroe Market and how each party is best suited in doing so.

What each party and many outsiders do not realise is that the land does not belong to the borough council, it belongs to the good folk of Clitheroe and will always remain so.

In the 1870s Clitheroe citizens purchased the present market land for use as a cattle market and auction site.

This was done to eliminate the overcrowding in the town centre by farm animals and market stalls.

Like the purchase of the castle and its surrounding grounds by Clitheroe citizens, the market grounds was purchased by Clitheroe folk, and will always remain their property

Therefore it would be nice, if every one that keeps coming up with pie in the sky schemes on what to do with that land, first communicate in the first place with the Clitheroe town council and then they in turn should communicate with the citizens of Clitheroe, to see what they want to do with their property.

Any scheme should in future be discussed in full with the citizens of Clitheroe and if needed their approval sought by a

local referendum, where every citizen can say yes or no to any scheme or alteration that is proposed.

Seeing it’s their land then any decisions made should be binding and accepted by all none Clitheroe citizens come what may.
