A man has appeared before Blackburn magistrates charged in connection an attempted robbery at McDonald's in Accrington on Wednesday.

John Carroll, 40, of Dowry Street, Accrington, was charged with attempting to rob McDonald’s employee Matthew Taylor of cash, possessing an offensive weapon, a hammer, and possessing a bladed instrument, a Stanley knife, in McDonald's.

He was remanded in custody to appear before the crown court on March 14.

Two workmen were praised by police after the alleged incident for stopping the suspect and waving down a passing patrol car.
