POLICE tried to stop a motorist who was doing just 10 miles an hour but swerving across the road.

Blackburn magistrates heard that despite police activating the blue lights, sirens and flashing headlights Pawel Przybyl still failed to stop.

When his vehicle eventually came to a halt officers said he was barely able to stand.

Przybyl, 59, of Wellington Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen for analysis.

He was made subject to a curfew between 8pm and 5am for two months, ordered to pay £85 costs and £85 victim surcharge and banned from driving for 17 months.

Tracy Yates, prosecuting, said after he had been stopped Przybyl tried to push past the officers and eventually had to be taken to the ground and handcuffed.

At the police station, speaking through a Polish interpreter, he agreed to provide samples but then failed to do so.

Jonathan Taylor, defending, said his client worked on an assembly line and recalled having four beers with colleagues after work before driving home.

"When the police stopped him he got confused but he accepts he had no medical reason for not providing a sample," said Mr Taylor.
