A CHORLEY man arrested on suspicion of raping a woman has been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

The 29-year-old man attended a police station yesterday afternoon to be questioned over an allegation that a 34-year-old woman was raped in Preston city centre at around 3am the same day.

Police confirmed this evening that he has now been released as officers continue to investigate the allegation.

Detectives had issued a witness appeal following an allegation that a woman was raped in an alleyway between the Hogarths bar and St John’s Minster on Church Street.

Following the allegation police moved to reassure the public and stepped up patrols in the area

Det Insp Warren Atkinson said: “I would like to reassure people that incidents of this nature are rare in Preston City Centre.

“If you saw or know anything that could assist with our investigation, please get in touch as you could hold vital information.”
