My friend Henry since 1976 when we sat together as councillors in the Blackburn Council chamber.
Henry always endeared himself to my family and friends and was always comfortable when included in so many family events.
I will miss our chats on faith and politics, subjects where we always agreed.
When you use to say that you wanted to die and was told you that it wasn't your choice but you would be called when the Almighty chose, you always accepted and agreed.
Rest in peace Henry.

My friendship with Henry began in 1976 when he was a Labour Councillor and I was a Conservative Councillor, but the political divide never came between us because we shared a love of opera, especially Wagner opera. When Council meetings got boring, we went outside and rather scurrilously cast the various Councillors on both sides into suitable operatic roles. I have happy memories of evenings spent at his Adelaide Terrace home listening to the whole of Wagner's Ring Cycle on his wonderful stereo system, accompanied by Edna Roberts who had been Barbara Castle's secretary. Following my move to Leeds, we still kept in touch and met up in Seattle for Wagner's Ring. He invited me to speak to his students at Rivington High School and it was obvious that his students really loved him. Then there was his wonderful ordination at Blackburn Cathedral, at which I was a guest and since then, I attended an anniversary celebration with him at St Michael's. These events were two of the very few occasions in my life when I, a Roman Catholic, have received Holy Communion in the Church of England. I often teased him that he was more Roman than I was and that he seemed to have forgotten the little matter of the Thirty Nine Articles! He wasn't perfect - he could be waspish, but it was hard to take it seriously. He was a dear friend for 42 years and I shall miss his occasional telephone chats and the prospect of seeing him on what would have been his 90th birthday. Attached is a picture of Henry as a Councillor with other Councillors and officers from Blackburn Council. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
